Hampta Pass Trek

5 Days

The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas, connecting the lush green valleys of Kullu to the stark, high-altitude desert of Spiti.

Imagine walking through dense pine forests, crossing icy rivers, trekking on snowfields, and then suddenly stepping into a barren, moon-like landscape—all in just a few days. That’s what makes Hampta Pass truly unforgettable.

At an altitude of around 14,100 ft, this trek offers the perfect mix of adventure, scenic beauty, and accessibility—making it ideal for both beginners and experienced trekkers.

That’s what the Hampta Pass Trek is all about — contrast, thrill, and discovery

Attractions: Highlights of the Hampta Pass Trek

The Hampta Pass Trek is a visual and cultural delight:

  • Kullu Valley: Pine forests, apple orchards, and wildflowers (May–June).
  • Hampta Pass: Panoramic views at 14,000 feet of Deo Tibba and Indrasan.
  • Chandratal Lake: A 4,300m gem with color-changing waters.
  • Lahaul Valley: Barren, rugged cliffs and the Chandra River.
  • Himachali Culture: Interact with locals in Chhika or Chatru, tasting Sidu or Dham.
  • Wildlife/Flora: Spot ibex, blue sheep, snow leopards, and alpine herbs.

Best time for Hampta Pass Trek

The best time to do the Hampta Pass Trek is from mid-June to September. During this period, the trail comes alive with snow-covered passes in June, lush green meadows in July and August, and clear skies with golden landscapes in September. Each month offers a unique experience—whether you’re chasing snow, wildflowers, or panoramic mountain views. Avoid October to May, as the trail is closed due to heavy snowfall.

Difficulty Level

The Hampta Pass Trek is classified as easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners with basic fitness levels. The trail involves gradual ascents and descents, with some challenging sections near the pass itself. The trek doesn’t require technical climbing skills, but good cardiovascular fitness is essential.

Hampta Pass Trek itinerary

The standard route of the Hampta Pass Trek begins from Jobra (near Manali) and ends at Chatru, with a possible drive to Chandratal Lake, if the roads are open.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my itinerary:
  • Day 1: Manali to Jobra, trek to Chika
  • Day 2: Chika to Balu Ka Ghera
  • Day 3: Balu Ka Ghera to Hampta Pass, descend to Shea Goru
  • Day 4: Shea Goru to Chatru, optional drive to Chandratal
  • Day 5: Return to Manali

One of the most surreal moments for me was standing on top of Hampta Pass. I remember looking back at the green Kullu Valley and then forward into the brown, barren, almost alien landscape of Spiti. It felt like crossing between two worlds.

🛡️ Safety & Altitude Tips

  • Acclimatised in Manali for a full day
  • Drank plenty of water (3–4 litres daily)
  • Kept my pace slow and steady
  • Ate enough, even when I didn’t feel like it
  • Let my trek leader know if I felt dizzy or off

Also, don’t ignore signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) like nausea, headache, or breathlessness. Descending to a lower altitude usually helps.

Fitness Requirements and Preparation

While the Hampta Pass Trek is beginner-friendly, basic fitness preparation enhances your experience significantly. For easy to moderate treks like valley of flowers, cardiovascular endurance is essential. Aim to run 4.5 kilometers in under 40 minutes consistently before your trek.

Start preparing at least 4-6 weeks before your trek with regular cardio exercises like jogging, cycling, or swimming. Include strength training for legs and core muscles, and practice walking with a loaded backpack to simulate trekking conditions.
