Legends and History of Tungnath:

Tungnath holds a profound connection to the ancient lore of the Panch Kedar Circuit, a series of Lord Shiva temples built by the Pandavas. According to legend, Vyas Rishi advised the Pandavas that their sins from the Mahabharata war, including the act of killing their own relatives (the Kauravas), could only be absolved by Lord Shiva himself. Seeking redemption, the Pandavas embarked on a quest to find Shiva, who had distanced himself from them due to their perceived guilt.

In an attempt to evade the Pandavas, Shiva transformed into a bull and sought refuge in an underground sanctuary at Guptakashi. However, the Pandavas were determined and pursued him. As the story goes, Shiva’s body parts manifested at five different locations, representing the “Panch Kedar,” where the Pandavas erected temples to worship and seek forgiveness.

Each location corresponds to a part of Shiva’s body: Tungnath is recognized as the place where his arms (bahu) were seen, with the other parts appearing at Kedarnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar.
